I just wanted to make sure I got up the deck before tomorrow AM for those who are interested.
Not much commentary on this (need to get my beauty sleep), but I decided after the events of Sixteen Again on ChannelFireball.com that I needed to speed up my defensive speed.
Barely Boros lost [perhaps predictably] to beloved Naya Lightsaber, and the other Boros deck won it all.
That led me to believe that Act of Treason would not be the right tool for this tournament. There is relatively little worth aiming an Act of Treason at in the other Boros deck, and against Lightsaber, it’s probably worth it just to point a Plow rather than a Threaten at the big babe.
Plus, Sean McKeown offered me the use of his Baneslayer Angels for my sideboard.
Selling out much?
Yeah, but I plan to win tomorrow, and all the decks that did best in my testing had Baneslayer Angels.
This is the 75 I plan to sleeve up manana, provided I can find Lightning Bolts:
Barely Boros v. 1 point whatever
3 Ajani Vengeant
4 Burst Lightning
2 Earthquake
4 Goblin Guide
4 Lightning Bolt
4 Plated Geopede
4 Hellspark Elemental
4 Hell’s Thunder
4 Zektar Shrine Expedition
3 Path to Exile
4 Arid Mesa
7 Mountain
4 Naya Panorama
1 Plains
4 Scalding Tarn
4 Terramorphic Expanse
sb:
1 Ajani Vengeant
2 Earthquake
4 Goblin Ruinblaster
2 Volcanic Fallout
4 Baneslayer Angel
1 Path to Exile
1 Plains
Good luck tomorrow, unless you’re playing YT.
LOVE
MIKE

God damn it Flores, I just lent away my playset of Baneslayers to my friend for States, now you tell me!
Purely 2 Plain in the deck to cast a set of Baneslayers. I love the greed. It’s like when I would have 2 Forests in the Valakut deck and then I would get Archive Trapped. Still, pretty sick. Also, if you managed to acquire Baneslayers anyway, wouldn’t Naya Lightsaber be a better deck to run?
If I were going to states I would run the UWR deck, the Spreading Seas deck or for fun, TurboFog. Actually, no. Those are what I would play if I wanted to do well. When I still went to States I played RDW like every year except for the one year I actually did well. That year I played Flores Magnivore and just played against Solar Flare every round. XD
I like your list, but have you thought of cutting white for black at all? This deck could use more Blightning.
Just the Deck List…
Your story has been summoned to the battlefield – Trackback from MTGBattlefield…
I’m pretty surprised that you dumped the Acts of Treason. BigHeadJoe (the other guy on Yo! MTG Taps!) and I played a pair of games tonight, him playing Barely Boros for the first time and me playing Naya Lightsaber for the first time, and he won both games on the back of Act of Treason.
Game one I was at 7 life, & I tapped out for what would be a lethal Baneslayer to his empty board. He topdecks a Goblin Guide and plays Act of Treason on my Angel to hit me for exactly 7. Game two I had a turn 3 Thoctar, which he stole with AoT on his 4th turn to kill me alongside a Zektar Shrine elemental token.
Coupled with the ridiculous amount of burn in the deck, Act of Treason just seems SO good against any deck with bomby creatures (Baneslayer & Thoctar). So far, we haven’t been able to determine exactly what makes NLS a bad matchup for Barely Boros (although, as I mentioned, we only played two games).
Hehe sideboarded planes for that baneslayer is pretty nice, hope it all goes well at states. Your decks always work well, for instance the older 5 color cascade has gotten me a high win (except against jund which I kept a terrible hand), but love the work on this and the podcasts!
I played the this 60 on Saturday with an extra Plains main in place of a Terramorphic Expanse so I could board 2 DoJ, and Act of Treason instead of Path. if my memory serves here was the board I ran:
1 Earthquake
2 Day of Judgment
3 Volcanic Fallout
3 Path to Exile
4 Goblin Ruinblaster
2 Celestial Purge
I wound up losing to a R/G Variant of Eldrazi Green (a pretty awesome deck) and lost in Top 4 to Jacerator. I love Act of Treason against Baneslayer, I think it’s better than running Baneslayer itself personally. I boarded the DoJ’s against Wall of Denial and Sphinx of Jwar Isle, although I don’t think it was the best plan. I think if I could do things differently I would go to 2 Earthquake sideboard and 4 Fallout in place of the DofJ’s, and go back to one Plains, or keep it at 2 to avoid Acidic Slime tech to keep me off white.
Losing either Plains to an Archive Trap could be potentially crippling to your sideboard strategy, Mike. Hopefully, as I am writing this after the fact, you never had to find this out for yourself.
I am somewhat considering running 2 Quest for Ancient Secrets Sideboard and running an Island main in case I have to face that damn Jacerator deck again. What is your opinion on that? I would have won with one more turn I feel.
Anyway, just some thoughts. In an unrelated plug, I think we are going to interview the winner of MD States tomorrow for YO! MtG TAPS! Lloyd Frias is a guy both Joe and I went to elementary school with, so we’re pretty pumped for him.
Later!

Just curious, what software were you using for that mock tournament? MTGO, or something else? Been looking for something that I can play against myself with some kind of visual interface to get a feel for how decks work out. Proxying up 8+ cards per deck is annoying, so I am hoping there’s something better out there. Great article on ChannelFireball! 🙂
i have been testing soul’s fire in place of threaten and the results are very strong.
soul’s fire + geopede or shrine is an additional 7 damage and you can also randomly kill baneslayers with it. give it a try 🙂
Hi Mike!
After playing at states, do you think you would make anymore changes to the “Barely Boros” list? What were your experiences and how did you do?
So how did you do for you do with this deck? I played Barely Boros also (with mark of mutinys instead of act of treason) and I finished 2nd in my state.
